Is Marsh Way/ New Road Havering’s Biggest Crash Hotspot As Labour Councillors Push Long Awaited Changes.
Mounting anger is growing over a dangerous Havering junction as residents report weekly incidents and demand urgent action, while councillors demand long-awaited safety changes must now be delivered.
A Havering resident has raised urgent safety concerns about the traffic light junction at Rainham Marsh Way and New Road, warning it has become extremely hazardous with frequent accidents and near misses.”
“I recently experienced a near collision while driving straight through the junction when another driver attempted to turn right directly across my path. I had to swerve to avoid impact. There appears to be a widespread misunderstanding, with drivers wrongly believing a green light gives them priority to turn right.”
“This is not an isolated incident. Around a year ago, I witnessed a serious crash at the same junction where a motorist drove into oncoming traffic and was left injured in the road directly in front of my vehicle.”
“More alarmingly, just yesterday my husband was involved in a significant collision at this exact location. While driving straight through, another vehicle pulled out across him, causing a major crash. He was able to get out of the car with help from passers-by but has been left shaken and suffering with arm swelling.”
“As residents living locally, we see accidents here on a regular basis, often weekly. It is deeply concerning that such a dangerous junction has not yet been addressed.”
“I am particularly worried about pedestrian safety. I have three children, including one who travels independently to secondary school, and I am concerned about him using this crossing. I have seen vehicles end up in the middle of the junction where pedestrians are meant to cross.”
“With new housing developments bringing more residents into the area, the risks will only increase. This is a serious and ongoing danger to the public.”
“It is only a matter of time before a more severe or even fatal incident occurs if nothing is done.”
The Beam Park Labour team of Trevor McKeever and Matt Stanton have reaffirmed their long-standing commitment to securing safety improvements at the dangerous Marsh Way junction, following years of sustained engagement with Havering Council and Transport for London (TfL).
As residents of the area long before being elected, both councillors are acutely aware of the risks this junction has posed for many years. Since taking office, they have made it a priority issue, keeping local residents regularly informed through newsletters, social media updates, and direct engagement.
Over the past years, multiple on-site meetings have been held with TfL and Havering officers to push for meaningful changes. Throughout this process, the councillors have consistently pressed Havering Council for clarity and a firm timeline for delivery, making it clear that residents expect action rather than further delay.
The proposals now progressing include improvements to the traffic light sequencing, with an additional signal phase planned to reduce traffic conflict. TfL has completed the signal design for the junction, including the introduction of a dedicated right-turn phase, while the overall junction design — featuring a new splitter island — is currently being finalised.
Council officers have confirmed that they are awaiting final costings for the signal re-phasing so that these can be incorporated into the overall scheme budget. The project will be funded through the 2026/27 Local Implementation Plan, and the Council’s contractor, Marlborough, is now preparing a construction programme.
While acknowledging that the process has been slower than residents would like, the councillors have reiterated that they will continue to challenge delays, scrutinise progress, and press Havering Council for firm delivery dates as the scheme moves towards construction.
The councillors have also thanked Havering Daily for its continued support in publicising the campaign and helping to keep public attention on the need for urgent action. They have stressed that media scrutiny and resident pressure have played an important role in ensuring this long-running safety issue remains firmly on the agenda.
“We won’t be taking our foot off the pedal,” Trevor said. “This junction has been dangerous for far too long, and residents deserve to see real, lasting improvements delivered.”
