A special moment in Havering’s history was marked this week as a new heritage plaque was unveiled at the RAF Hornchurch Heritage Centre, recognising its importance to the borough’s past.

The ceremony, led by the Mayor of Havering Councillor Sue Ospreay, brought together local representatives including MP Julia Lopez and Hornchurch councillors to celebrate the site’s official recognition as one of Havering’s key heritage assets.

Tony Philpott, Chairman of the Heritage Centre, spoke of the pride felt by everyone involved. “In the five years we’ve been here lots of things have moved on and we are very proud to keep the memory alive of RAF Hornchurch. Today marked another significant step when our plaque was unveiled by the Mayor to recognise the RAF Hornchurch Heritage Centre as one of Havering’s important heritage assets. It was an honour to have the Mayor, local MP Julia Lopez and Hornchurch councillors attend.”

Councillor Barry Mugglestone also highlighted the importance of preserving local history. “As a local councillor and Armed Forces champion I welcomed the opportunity to attend this significant occasion for the RAF Hornchurch Heritage Centre. It is very important that we acknowledge our local history of the Hornchurch Airfield and leave a legacy for our children. Thank you to Tony, trustees and volunteers who work so hard to maintain this centre for the community.”

The recognition comes after Havering Council published its updated Heritage List in September 2024, adding 33 new sites considered to hold significant historical value. The list aims to protect and celebrate the borough’s unique heritage and ensure it remains part of the local identity for future generations.

The RAF Hornchurch Heritage Centre is one of those newly recognised sites. Officially opened in September 2021, it is based in two 1930s cottages that once formed part of Suttons Institution before becoming part of RAF Hornchurch during the Second World War. The site later became part of St George’s Hospital before being taken on by the Hornchurch Aerodrome Historical Trust.

Yesterday, the centre preserves the rich history of the airfield, including its vital role during both world wars and its post war legacy.

The unveiling of the plaque marks another step in ensuring that Havering’s history is not only remembered but continues to be shared with the community for years to come.
