Community Asked to Pick Up Their Knitting Needles Early for Peter Chand’s Winter Appeal
With summer still in full swing, local charity organiser Peter Chand is already looking ahead to the colder months, launching preparations for his annual Winter Appeal to help people experiencing homelessness and families facing hardship across the community.
Starting from 1 September, the appeal will once again be supported by the Knit and Crochet Appeals Need You Facebook group, with volunteers invited to knit, crochet and donate warm clothing that will make a real difference during the winter months.
This year’s appeal will provide essential winter items for people sleeping rough, while also working alongside local schools to support children and families in need.
Organisers are encouraging supporters to get started now, giving crafters plenty of time to prepare their handmade donations before collections begin in September.
The appeal is looking for handmade items in both children’s and adult sizes, including:
- Beanie hats
- Scarves
- Gloves
- Mittens
- Neck warmers
There is also an urgent need for new, unused pairs of socks for both children and adults.
To help volunteers distribute donations efficiently, all handmade items should be clearly labelled as Adult or Child, along with the appropriate size.
Because storage space is currently unavailable, supporters are asked to hold on to their completed donations until 1 September, when drop-off locations, a postal address and collection arrangements will be announced.
Free collection will also be available by request for donations within Barking, Dagenham and Havering.
Peter Chand has become well known across the local community for organising seasonal appeals that provide practical support to vulnerable residents, with hundreds of donated items distributed each year thanks to the generosity of volunteers.
Anyone wishing to take part can find knitting and crochet patterns in the Albums section of the Knit and Crochet Appeals Need You Facebook group, with separate patterns available for both children’s and adult items.
Whether you knit, crochet or simply donate a new pair of socks, every contribution will help someone stay warm this winter.
