Havering police officers are making national headlines with their successful crackdown on tool theft — and are urging local residents to join them in the fight.

Led by South Havering Inspector Mark Connolly, local officers are not only recovering stolen tools across London, but setting an example for forces across the country.

In recent weeks, the team achieved a major breakthrough, recovering thousands of pounds worth of stolen tools from two boot sales — one in Rainham and one in Collier Row. The success of this operation has seen Havering officers called to Hertfordshire to share their expertise and support colleagues tackling the same problem there.

“We continue to work with our partners around tool theft and tool marking,” Inspector Connolly told the Havering Daily. “This week we worked collaboratively at an event in Hertfordshire. Within Havering, we will be running similar events across the borough soon, which will be advertised alongside Havering Council.”

Tool theft is an escalating problem, particularly affecting trade workers whose livelihoods depend on their equipment. Now, police are urging the public to take proactive steps to protect their property and help officers clamp down on crime.

“It is important that members of the community work with their local policing teams and report any suspicious behaviour,” said Inspector Connolly. “If you are a trade worker living in Havering, make sure your tools are secure, registered with the manufacturers, removed from your vehicle overnight, and, if possible, covered with CCTV.”

The advice doesn’t stop with trade workers. All residents are being reminded to secure their vehicles and take extra precautions, especially overnight.

“If you are a local resident, please check your cars are secure and locked. Keys should be kept in RFID blocking bags when in your property overnight,” Inspector Connolly added.

Police across Havering are stepping up their patrols in key neighbourhoods and targeting known hotspots for vehicle crime and tool theft. But officers stress that community support is critical in preventing future offences.

“We are actively patrolling your neighbourhood to keep you safe,” Inspector Connolly emphasised. “Your support with these matters helps us to catch and prosecute offenders and prevent crime from taking place.”

Havering’s tool theft crackdown shows what can be achieved when police and community work hand in hand. Now, officers are calling on all residents to remain vigilant and take sensible precautions — together, they hope to drive down crime and protect the tools of the trade that keep our local economy running.
