Havering Council Joins With Partners To Launch Food Alliance.

A new borough-wide initiative, the Havering Food Alliance, has launched to bring together charities, businesses, community groups, and public sector partners to tackle food insecurity and build a fairer, healthier, and more sustainable food system for everyone in the borough.

Food insecurity affects thousands of Havering residents, with many families, older people, and individuals feeling the strain of rising living costs, making it harder to put nutritious food on the table. The Food Alliance aims to change this by ensuring all residents have access to affordable, healthy food, regardless of income or circumstance. It also supports local producers, reduces food waste, and promotes community well-being through joint efforts. 

Councillor Ray Morgon, Leader of Havering Council, said: 
“As people continue to feel the pinch with higher costs of living – we know many residents are struggling to put food on the table.  

The Havering Food Alliance is an important step forward in coordinating efforts and working in partnership to make sure no one is left behind. I hope this joined up approach will help support families with access to affordable and healthy food as well as creating a stronger, more resilient food supply system that benefits the whole borough.”

We’ve helped launch the Havering Food Alliance, a partnership that brings the community together to tackle food insecurity and runs the Rainham Food Pantry, ensuring no one is left without essentials. Beyond providing food, the pantry helps people reduce anxiety, improve budgeting skills, and offers a vital social space for people who might otherwise feel isolated. Together, we’re creating a more joined-up and sustainable approach to supporting residents throughout the year.” 

The Rainham Food Pantry is a pivotal part of the Alliance’s delivery model and has received positive feedback from users. One resident said, “£6 is great value for the amount of food you get,” while another described it as “a great social hub for mixing, talking to people, and connecting with the community.” 

Demand for support continues to grow, with many calling for expanded access. In response, the Food Alliance plans to open a second food pantry in Rainham and trial social supermarkets in Harold Hill and Hornchurch. This expansion depends on securing more surplus and donated food from local farmers, retailers, and national redistribution charities such as FareShare, Felix, and Neighbourly. 

Working closely with partners, the Alliance is mapping local food support services, identifying gaps, and sharing resources. Over the coming months, it will launch a borough-wide food strategy, promote food education, and pilot initiatives through community hubs and networks.
