Queen’s Hospital Receives Special Bereavement Blankets for Families
Last week, Queen’s Hospital Adult Critical Care Unit in Rom Valley Way, Romford, was presented with pairs of matching 40-inch by 46-inch blankets, specially crafted for bereavement purposes. Each pair consists of two identical blankets: one will remain with the body of the deceased, while the other will be given to the grieving family as a keepsake.
The initiative was spearheaded by Kemi Awonubi-Oloyede, who promised to deliver these unique blankets to Vikki Rance and the Adult Critical Care Unit at Queen’s Hospital. The generous donation of materials for this project was made possible by Jay at Fine Fair Consultancy and Mandy at New Way Tuition, whose contributions have allowed the Sew London Project CIC to craft these comforting keepsakes.
The project has received vital support from Havering, Barking & Dagenham Volunteering and Community News, as well as Jon Gildersleeve, who rallied behind the Sew London Project CIC and the sewing community groups that came together to create these beautiful bereavement blankets.

A special thanks was also extended to Tina Thompson-Theis, who tirelessly supported the project by sewing several of the intricate quilted blankets herself.
Kemi has invited individuals and companies who wish to contribute to the project, either through monetary donations or by volunteering, to contact her directly via email at sewlondonproject@gmail.com or on Instagram.
If you are interested in becoming one of Sew London Project CIC’s volunteers to help make more blankets for families in need, please reach out to Kemi at the same email address.
This heartfelt project reflects the strong community spirit locally, with many coming together to provide comfort to grieving families during a difficult time.
