Fun packed Architecture Adventure is back at The Mercury.

Architecture Adventure is set to return to The Mercury in Romford this spring! The fun packed adventure returns between 8-14 April the Romford shopping centre and will be teaming up with local arts organisation The NO Collective and a host of community partners to enjoy and discuss the places we live and enjoy in Havering.

Starting the week with a free workshop for local people to create a light dispersing ‘Art Nouveau’ decoration for their homes at The Mercury’s weekly ‘Breakfast Club’, the festival week will celebrate everything from enhancing interior design to talking about things that will affect our future living and working in our towns – like Romford’s new Masterplan.

Architecture Adventure is a bi-annual festival based in Romford which has been running since 2018. Organised by The NO Collective, it aims to improve awareness on how decisions are made in our ‘built environment’ and encourage more young people to take a step toward creative careers in occupations like architecture, property and interior design. Activities in the past have included courses for schools as well as fun activities that take place every year such as ‘Romford Utopia’; a two day ‘miniature town’ building event where children can re-imagine (to scale) how they would like to see Romford.
Natalie, from The NO Collective says:

“Everyone is really affected by the decisions that are made in planning and building projects locally, yet there are few platforms for people to understand these changes in Havering. In parallel to this, the uptake of careers like architecture, engineering and surveying are low in the borough, especially for girls. We hope that by running fun and creative workshops for all ages, we will help local people understand how they can have a say in their local environments, while at the same time challenge the perspective of our local kids, that these impactful and creative careers could be for them.”
The events which will run across the borough between 8th and 14th April will all be free to join and are supported by a number of like-minded organisations, including Havering Changing, Bagnall & Morris and Havering Council’s Masterplanning outreach team ‘Make Good’. The Mercury Shopping Centre is the headline sponsor of these events and will be hosting an activity nearly every day during the week.
Spencer, The Centre Manager of The Mercury says:
“We love having the Architecture Adventure festival here – all of the are unique, educational and fun – with most of them being for the whole family to enjoy. Working at The Mercury, I can say that managing a big property is an enjoyable and versatile occupation – it really does require a creative mind!”
As well as the festival’s two day ‘Romford Utopia’ activity on 13th & 14th April for kids, and the Breakfast Club window decoration workshop on Monday 8th; The Mercury will also be hosting a ‘Card-struction’ day with local artist Hannah Davis and the centre’s waste contractors Bagnall & Morris on Thursday 10th April. There is also a day to test your engineering skills at ‘Triangle Town’ on Friday 12th. If you live in Harold Hill, there will also be a free activity on Saturday 13th April for families in the MyPlace Youth Centre which will look interior decoration that reflects different cultures. This forms part of Havering Changing’s Creative Saturday programme.
All of the activities will be listed on The Mercury’s website along with The NO Collective’s Eventbriite. Some will require booking. To find out more please email
