Havering climate activists condemn London City Airport expansion.
Today members of Havering Friends of the Earth write in the Havering Daily asking locals to condemn London City Airport expansion plans.
London City Airport wants to increase the number of flights travelling over Havering. They have produced a consultation document and set up a series of exhibitions in several London boroughs. But not Havering.
Although we are subject to the constant noise and pollution from 6.30am to 10.30pm from their flights, our borough is not worthy of their consideration.
The main complaint that Havering residents will have is that they plan to get rid of the weekend curfew and want to allow an unspecified number of flights on Saturday afternoons and evenings up to 10.30pm. The much needed weekend break for the continuous roar of planes will be stopped.
They also want to double the number of flights from 6.30am till 7.00am on weekdays.
We would like the council to oppose these expansion plans. How can an airport be allowed to expand when we know that pollution from aircraft is contributing to climate change?
We have now experienced the devastating results of the climate emergency here in Havering during the summer, with wildfires even destroying homes. How can one of the very activities that is causing these emergencies be allowed to increase its impact?
With many families across the borough reeling from flooding earlier in the year and now a heatwave compounded by wildfires, we urge all Havering residents to oppose these expansion plans which only care about London City’s profits and not the future of our planet.
The consultation document can be found at:
londoncityairport@cratus.co.uk
We, frankly, think the consultation questions are rigged. Residents of Havering may want to give their views without completing the document.
