Major incident declared following A127 Upminster collision.

Many homes evacuated following fears of a gas leak as firefighters work non stop to secure the area.

Members of the emergency services remained all evening at the scene of a road traffic collision where a motorist crashed on the A127 Front Lane junction, hitting a gas main. The driver was treated at the scene by the air ambulance and then taken to hospital were his condition was said to be critical.

The vehicle collided with a gas main and man was removed from the vehicle by London Ambulance Service crews.

Assistant Commissioner Patrick Goulbourne said: “Due to the nature of the collision, impact to the road network and the impact on the wider community, the Brigade declared a major incident which has now been stood down.

“Crews worked with partners to make the scene safe as quickly as possible.

“There were road closures in place which caused severe congestion and we urged people to avoid the area.”

Properties in the surrounding area were evacuated and a 200m safety cordon was put in place as a precaution.

Council officers were at the Golden Crane pub to offer help and support to locals who had been evacuated from their properties.

The Brigade was called at 18:15 and the incident was over for firefighters by 23:19. Fire crews from Harold Hill, Bexley, East Ham and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.
