Why Does Ingrebourne Hill Keep Catching Fire? Residents Demand Answers.
Residents living near Ingrebourne Hill and the Country Park between Rainham and Elm Park are calling for urgent action after a series of grass fires has repeatedly broken out in the area, leaving firefighters battling blazes on an almost daily basis.
Firefighters from across Havering have attended numerous incidents in recent weeks as hectares of grassland have caught fire during the current hot, dry weather.
People living close to the park say they are becoming increasingly concerned about the frequency of the fires and the impact they are having on the local community, wildlife and emergency services.
One resident told the Havering Daily:
“We live next to the park and this is happening almost every day. Our firefighters are working incredibly hard to put these fires out. This needs urgent looking into and they must be stopped. We have been questioning how these fires start and why they keep starting.”
Several residents have also reported seeing groups of young people in the area riding e-bikes or scooters. Some have told the Havering Daily they have seen individuals carrying what they believed to be blow torches or barbecue lighters.
Residents are now calling for a thorough investigation into why the fires continue to occur and what measures can be taken to reduce the risk of further incidents.
Many have also expressed concern for the safety of firefighters, who have repeatedly been called to tackle blazes in difficult conditions, as well as the damage being caused to local wildlife and the natural environment.
With drought conditions and prolonged hot weather increasing the risk of wildfires across the capital, residents say they hope additional measures can be introduced to help prevent further fires and protect one of Havering’s most important green spaces.
Anyone who witnesses suspicious behaviour or sees a fire starting is urged to contact the emergency services immediately. If anyone has information that could assist the authorities in establishing how the fires are starting, they should report it to the police or the London Fire Brigade.
