Teenager sentenced after robbing 12 year old with knife.

A teenager has been sentenced after he robbed a 12-year-old boy in Romford whilst armed with a knife.

On Sunday, 23 January just before 7pm a 12-year-old was on his way home from the cinema and was walking to the bus stop in Eastern Avenue, Romford, when he called his mum on his mobile phone. As he was on the phone, a 16-year-old boy wearing a black balaclava grabbed the victim by his hood, causing him to choke, and grabbed the mobile.

The victim managed to grab his phone back and ran with the suspect behind him.  He shouted for help as loud as he could and thankfully he soon saw Police Officers wearing hi-visibility coats near a pub in South Street, where the suspect ran off into an alleyway.

Members of public pointed to the alleyway next to the pub and also said the suspect had a knife.

Officers gave chase and stopped a male fitting the description in Victoria Road. Officers searched the boy and found a kitchen knife in his right hand jacket pocket, measuring approximately 15cm in total from bottom of handle to tip of blade. The blade itself was approximately 9cm. The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon. He was then further arrested for robbery after receiving further information from officers.

On Monday, 13 June, the 16-year-old suspect, from Chigwell, attended Barkingside Magistrates’ Court and was found guilty of robbery and carrying an offensive weapon.  He has been referred to the Redbridge Youth Offender panel for a contract having effect for an extended compliance period of six months. The total Youth Referral Order contract period is 12 months. The suspect will have to comply with regular supervision as well as adhere to a number of conditions, including (but not limited to) intervention work to prevent re-offending and restorative justice processes otherwise he will face being returned to court.
