Our star junior chef nine-year-old Joshua Puncheon from Harold Wood, today shows us how to make delicious steamed buns.
Mantou – Steamed Buns
2 tsp instant yeast
10ml vegetable oil
Water to steam
In a large pan on medium heat, add the milk.
Add the sugar.
Add the yeast.
Mix until the yeast is melted.
Switch the heat off and add the flour.
Add in the oil and mix into a soft dough.
When it is soft and elastic, transfer into a oiled bowl and leave to rise.
Once it has doubled in size it is ready to be rolled.
On a surface sprinkled with flour, roll the dough into a square.
Stretch it gently.
Cut into 12 pieces.
Place into a bamboo steamer, lined with baking paper or any other steaming devices you own.
Leave some space between them, do them in batches if easier.
Place on a pot with water and let it steam for about 20 minutes.
Be careful when opening the basket as the steam is hot.
Enjoy your buns!
