Step Inside The World Of Sense And Sensibility At Rainham Hall This Autumn

A new exhibition at Rainham Hall will reveal how the historic house was transformed for a major new adaptation of Sense and Sensibility.

The National Trust property was used as a filming location for the new UK film, with rooms at Rainham Hall transformed into the London home of Mrs Jennings, played by Fiona Shaw.

The exhibition, Filming Sense and Sensibility at Rainham Hall, opens on Thursday 24 September and runs until Saturday 19 December 2026. Visitors will be able to see costumes and props from the production and discover how a historic National Trust house was adapted for filming.

The film follows sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, played by Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esme Creed-Miles, with Rainham Hall providing a setting linked to one of the novel’s key London locations.

The exhibition is open Thursday to Saturday from 11am until 4pm. It is included with admission to the Hall, while an accessible free element will also be available in the Coach House.

The National Trust has told The Havering Daily that people living, working or studying in the RM13 postcode can visit Rainham Hall free of charge, with evidence of eligibility.

Jane Austen fans can also visit on Sunday 11 October, when Rainham Hall hosts All Things Austen: Step into Regency at Rainham Hall from noon until 4pm. Activities include Regency dancing, flower posy arranging, period card games, calligraphy, sewing and dressing up.

Tickets for the Austen event cost £15 for adults and include admission to the Hall. It is aimed at adults, although anyone aged 15 and over is welcome.
