“Havering Deserves Better Than Symbolism Politics” Say Local Conservatives

This week Havering celebrated raising the Union Jack above the town hall. It comes as Reform’s first major achievement since taking control of the council months ago.
The flags were taken down and moved to flagpoles on the lawn outside the town hall due to critical repairs to the roof under the last administration. However, photographs of the new flag show the Union Jack flying upside down. This is commonly used as a distress signal on sinking ships.
Conservatives have questioned the priorities of the Council. Speaking on the issue, Chairman of Hornchurch and Upminster Conservatives Adam Baker said,
“The Union Jack continues to fly proudly. But Reform must do better and prioritise making real change. Reform promised to ‘put the British people first’, so far that equates to a single Union Jack. They have failed to acknowledge the £2.7 million the council has reserved for foreign nationals.
Almost 100 days in and the libraries remain closed. Despite promises that they would open as one of the very first things Reform would do. We have seen much of Havering burn, with Launders Lane still on fire. Just £200k to help with that. Havering Council has failed to penalise TfL for delays to Gallows Corner, with no action on local road closures. Havering deserves more than symbolism politics.”
Former Romford Councillor, David Taylor added,
“I welcome and celebrate the repair of the flag poles and the flying of our national colours above the town hall. Reform have financed this themselves, and that’s a welcome patriotic act.
All credit to Cllr Keith Prince for making this happen.
However, the fact that they’ve flown the flag upside down is an embarrassment for Romford, on the national stage. If they can’t get the flag right, and they’re the party that shouts the loudest about them, then how will they sort out our homelessness crisis, dirty streets, empty shops, and Launders Lane? Poor kids can’t eat flags”.
