‘£1.5 Million Reward for Failure?’ Havering Council Leader Takes Aim at Water Chief.
Councillor Keith Prince A.M., Leader of Havering Council and London Assembly Member for Havering & Redbridge, has written directly to Heidi Mottram O.B.E., Chief Executive of Northumbrian Water Group, following reports that she is set to receive a £1.5 million retention package.
The intervention comes as residents and businesses continue to face severe disruption caused by Essex & Suffolk Water’s repeated delays at Gallows Corner.
In his letter, Councillor Prince said months of delays had brought one of Havering’s busiest junctions to a standstill, leaving residents trapped in daily gridlock and local businesses losing customers and income. In the most serious cases, businesses have been forced to close.
Councillor Prince said:
“Residents and businesses across Havering have suffered for months because of repeated delays and missed deadlines at Gallows Corner. Against that backdrop, people are entitled to ask what exactly this £1.5 million package is rewarding.
“They cannot retain the water in the pipe at Gallows Corner, yet they want to pay £1.5 million to retain their chief executive. Is this a reward for failure?
“Executive pay should reflect performance and accountability. Heidi Mottram should hand back the money and ensure it is used to support the businesses and residents who have suffered because of this disruption.
“The immediate priority must be completing these works, restoring confidence and ending the misery being experienced by the people of Havering.”
Councillor Prince has called on Northumbrian Water Group and Essex & Suffolk Water to focus their resources on completing the Gallows Corner works without further delay and to provide certainty to affected residents and businesses.
