“Sam You Make Us Proud” Fury as GBH Conviction Sparks Outrage Over Attack on Police Officer.
Pro Palestine activist jailed after smashing a police officer with a sledgehammer and breaking her back in multiple places.
“Sam you make us proud” were the words being chanted as Samuel Corner was convicted of grievous bodily harm, where poor Sam, it was said, acted in a state of panic and tried desperately to protect others with a sledgehammer.
It was, of course, Sam who was found guilty after he struck a female police officer with that sledgehammer, leaving her with devastating injuries including fractures to her spine. But of course, poor Sam, part of a pro Palestine group, was said to be acting in panic.
Sam is, it seems, a very worthy person to make others proud. Smashing a police officer with a sledgehammer and breaking her back is, apparently, a moment to celebrate. Well done Sam.
The reality is very different. The officer had been called to the break in incident and was simply doing her job. In the process of doing that job, she was attacked with a weapon and left with life changing injuries.
The court heard that the incident took place during a planned action at a defence site in Bristol, where damage was caused and officers responded. Despite the claims made in his defence, a jury found Samuel Corner guilty of GBH, reflecting the seriousness of the violence used.
Yesterday, as that guilty verdict was delivered, the chants of “Sam you make us proud” were heard. For many, that reaction will be as shocking as the incident itself.
Those carrying out acts like this are not heroes. They are individuals who have caused serious harm to someone serving the public.
There is nothing to admire in this. A police officer doing her duty was violently assaulted with a weapon and seriously injured.
Categorically, no police officer goes to work to be attacked.
