Exclusive: Prime Minister Calls on MP Margaret Mullane’s Input Ahead of Planned Wildfires Summit.

Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, has asked Dagenham and Rainham MP, Margaret Mullane, to contribute ideas to his planned summit on preventing wildfires. The PM contacted Margaret to get insights learned from the aftermath of the devastating wildfires in the summer 2022 heatwave that destroyed over 30 homes in Wennington Village and Farm Close Dagenham.

Margaret told the Havering Daily “I took the opportunity to feed the experiences suffered by local residents into the preparation for the summit on countering wildfires.

Specifically, I raised the need for effective fire breaks to be cut around the perimeters of fields to stop the spread of fires and that they be maintained to be free of vegetation. The response from some of the landowners around Wennington Village has been very disappointing, despite my calls for them to act. In view of that I have recommended that this be made mandatory for landowners.”

Margaret went on to add “I also added that the London Fire Brigade’s resources for east London serving Dagenham and Havering are being overstretched, coping with wildfires and the ongoing fires at Launders Lane. I included details of the number of call outs local firefighters have responded to over the years at Launders Lane.

In my submission to the Prime Minister I referred to the need to act to remove the imposition of Community Infrastructure Levy when residents rebuild homes destroyed. This is something I have been pressing for ever since the wildfire burnt down homes in Wennington Village. Government Ministers have responded to me acknowledging that this measure imposed by the last Government is unjust and will be removed. I have asked the Prime Minister to hasten this so that no homeowner will face this.”
