A Havering landlord has been fined more than £5,000 after failing to fix serious safety issues in a Romford home that put a family at risk.

Treldon Connell was taken to court by Havering Council over a property on Kingsbridge Road after ignoring an official Improvement Notice. The notice required urgent repairs to both the inside and outside of the home, including structural problems, dangerous electrics, and ongoing damp and mould.

Some of the hazards were classed as Category 1, meaning they posed a high risk to health and required immediate action by law.

Despite this, Connell failed to carry out the necessary work, leaving a tenant and her two children living in unsafe conditions.

At Barkingside Magistrates Court, he was fined a total of £5,335.05. This included a £2,500 fine, £1,835.05 in costs, and a £1,000 victim surcharge.

Havering Council said the case highlights its commitment to taking action against landlords who fail to provide safe housing.

Helen Oakerbee, Director of Planning and Public Protection, said the council will continue to crack down on irresponsible landlords and ensure residents in private rented homes are protected.

The council recently introduced new licensing schemes aimed at improving standards across the private rental sector.
