CCTV Petition Submitted — Now We Must Make the Case
News from Rainham & Wennington Labour Action Team.
Following the submission of a 672‑signature petition calling for CCTV in Rainham & Wennington, the Council has issued the following response to the Rainham & Wennington Labour Action Team:
“We are aware that not all areas of the borough are covered by networked CCTV — including Rainham and Wennington.
Some CCTV coverage is provided through Facilities Managed sites such as libraries, and re‑deployable cameras are used through the Joint Enforcement Tasking (JET) Group.
Once the initial borough‑wide CCTV upgrade is completed, we will review crime data to identify priority areas for new cameras. Where budgets allow, locations with the highest recorded crime will be prioritised.
It is therefore essential that residents continue to report all crime to the Met Police, as this evidence will directly inform future CCTV deployment.”
Rainham and Wennington Labour Action Team members welcomed the Council’s acknowledgment that CCTV plays an important role in deterring and detecting crime. They confirmed they will continue working with the police to increase the level of crime reporting in the ward.
“It’s imperative that residents report every crime they witness or experience,” said Fay Hough. “That’s the only way we will secure the CCTV coverage and policing that our community deserves.”
“Areas like Upminster and Hornchurch potentially have fewer issues precisely because they already have CCTV,” added Sue Watson. “We’re simply asking for fairness for Rainham, and we’ll continue working with the ward panel and residents to ensure the Council cannot overlook this area again.”
Siddique Ambia concluded: “Many of the powers available to police and local authorities rely on solid evidence. The more residents report, the stronger and more unavoidable the case becomes for the measures people want and deserve.”
