There was chaos in Upminster this afternoon after a man crashed his car and began tasering people as he tried to flee the scene.

The incident happened shortly after 4pm on Stewart Avenue when a man in his 20s reportedly lost control of his car, hitting a woman, a bollard and several dustbins before coming to a sudden stop.

Witnesses said the man jumped out of his vehicle, grabbed a bag, and attempted to run from the scene. Quick-thinking members of the public tried to stop him, with one bystander removing his bag to prevent him from escaping.

The man then pulled out a taser and began shocking people who tried to detain him. He ran off towards Springfield Gardens but later returned to retrieve his bag, shouting at witnesses before fleeing again.

Police arrived minutes later, with one officer scaling a fence to catch the suspect. The man was successfully arrested at the scene. His bag and phone were recovered by nearby residents who had stepped in to help.

Injured members of the public were seen by ambulance crews.
