Residents living on Regarth Avenue near Romford station have questioned the suitability of an assisted living hostel after several weekends of ongoing incidents.

Gem who lives on Regarth Avenue has dealt with all three members of the emergency services over the last two weekends after a series of incidents involving an elderly neighbour.

She told the Havering Daily: “We are concerned that despite being told that this is an assisted living hostel, those living there aren’t getting the proper assistance they should over the weekends when these incidents take place.

“An elderly neighbour who lives near me has unfortunately been subjected to many incidents that have left her very upset.

“She was visited by the council for a welfare check after they were informed that she had no family and no visitors, which is definitely not the case. She was then visited by the police for a welfare check as they were told she was in danger. Then she found the ambulance knocking on her door after they were told she had collapsed and died.

“Finally she was visited by the Fire Brigade after the smoke came out of her heating system and they were told her house was on fire.”

The pensioner who has lived on Regarth Avenue for many years is now upset and concerned.

“This is not the right place for a hostel like this. The area is already troubled with anti social behaviour and these latest issues have clearly highlighted that they may not be the right level of support given to those in need there.

“Over the last two weekends we have had all three emergency services here at all hours after being told incorrect information that has upset my neighbour.

“She has also had endless door knocking and now she clearly is very upset.”

Councillor Jane Keane was on Regarth Avenue last weekend and has been dealing with this situation.

Councillor Keane told the Havering Daily: “There have been some teething problems over two weekends which upset neighbours. I have visited those affected and over the weekend have contacted the relevant services.

“I have requested that the assisted living service put more support in place over the weekend for the new residents especially as moving in can be a stressful event.”
