As Havering residents wake up to a very snowy scene, council gritters have been out during the night gritting main roads.

Havering’s Council Leader, Councillor Ray Morgon told the Havering Daily: “We were prepared for this as we have a winter service plan that kicks in. The gritting lorries have been out across our main roads and will be out today gritting our High Streets as well.

“We are reviewing the conditions each hour and we know our gritters have a well established set of routes they are taking across the borough.

“Our refuse collections maybe a bit slower today due to the weather conditions.”

The extreme weather conditions has meant that the majority of schools across Havering are closed today.

The current cold spell is due to last until Sunday when temperatures are set to rise and rain is forecast.

“The gritters have been out regularly and will be out today and all this week as we expect the icy conditions to stay with us for another few days,” finished Councillor Morgon.
