As schools re-open their doors today, a Havering teacher who did not wish to be named spoke exclusively to the Havering Daily.
People don’t realise how hard teachers and all staff from the office to cleaners, to one to one staff have worked. Some days teachers have worked 7 am to 9 pm, planning. Google classroom is constant. Phoning parents to check the children and families are okay.
We have been open throughout this pandemic for key worker children putting ourselves in danger so others can get to work! The staff haven’t had any school holidays as we stayed open.
We have been doing zoom meetings every week and risk assessments constantly. People think we have had a holiday but we haven’t! We are on call 24hours for the parents and the children. We have families that have lost someone due to this virus so all staff have completed a course on helping bereavement in children. That’s a horrible thing to have to do.
The headteacher hasn’t stopped working and is so stressed because basically we are damned if we do and damned if we don’t. We are just as anxious and worried about returning at a fuller capacity but we are pushing our fears aside as those children need us!
Let’s support our teachers and back them as they work hard to support all the children in our borough.
