Havering pupils celebrate GCSE results

Pupils in Havering have been celebrating after receiving their GCSE results.

The borough’s overall pass rate was boosted to 69 per cent for pupils taking English and maths – a one per cent increase on last year.

One school, Bower Park, increased its pass rate in these subjects by 20 per cent to 65 per cent.

Nearly 2,800 pupils from 18 schools took their exams.

Councillor Robert Benham, Havering’s Cabinet Member for Children, Education and Families, said:

‘Although the exams are reportedly getting tougher, pupils in Havering have once again proved successful by achieving good, solid grades.  Congratulations go out to pupils and their teachers as they move on to do further studies.

‘For those who haven’t achieved the grades they were hoping for, it’s important that they liaise with their schools which are able to offer help and advice to support them.’

At Marshalls Park Academy, Romford, their results showed there had been an improvement in almost every key measure. In English, 83 per cent achieved a grade 4 or higher in at least one of their English subjects, with 70 per achieving a grade 5 or above.

Sixty six per cent of students also achieved a level 4 or higher in English and maths (combined) – a six per cent increase from 2018.

Headteacher Neil Frost congratulated and thanked pupils and staff for their immense hard work over the last academic year.

He said: ‘The progress that the students have made in their results is something we can all be extremely proud of and proof of the dedication, support and hard work of our students, parents and staff.

‘There are many individual and collective success stories which we as a school will be looking forward to celebrating in the near future, but some individual students are worthy of a mention.‘

Those success stories include Darcia Khaled, who achieved 5 level 9s, 4 level 8s and 1 level 7, and will be studying the sciences and maths.

Caitlyn Andrew achieved all grades at level 6 or higher, including a Level 9 and 5 Level 8s and plans to go into law after studying English, Literature and Chemistry and George Musliu plans to study maths, biology and chemistry after achieving all grades at level 5 or higher, including a Level 9 and 4 Level 8s.

All three are now preparing for sixth form college.
