‘THE MISERY IS OVER!’ ANDREW ROSINDELL SPEAKS OUT AS GALLOWS CORNER FINALLY REOPENS
Gallows Corner has finally fully reopened to traffic today, bringing an end to the major disruption that has plagued one of Havering’s busiest junctions during months of strengthening, refurbishment and major water infrastructure works.
The Gallows Corner flyover and roundabout are now fully open, with all remaining traffic management and diversion routes removed.
For motorists who have endured months of congestion, lengthy diversions and frustrating journeys, the reopening will come as a major relief.
But while traffic is now flowing again, Romford MP Andrew Rosindell says the impact of the works on local people, residents and businesses must not be forgotten.
Speaking to The Havering Daily, Mr Rosindell said:
“Today is good news for the people of Havering who have suffered terribly with the closure of Gallows Corner, over such a long period of time.
“Quite unnecessary due to bad planning and bad organisation by TfL. The misery is over, but the cost has been vast to local people.
“TfL should make sure local people are compensated following the disaster they have caused. The length of time it has taken to finish this job has been devastating for the local community, businesses and for local residents. It has been a horrific period for all the people in my constituency.”
The project has included strengthening and refurbishing the flyover, alongside major water infrastructure work carried out by Essex & Suffolk Water.
The completed works mean the new structure will allow the removal of the speed and weight restrictions, which is expected to improve journey reliability for motorists travelling through the area and help support local bus services.
New pedestrian and cycle crossings have also been installed around the roundabout, making journeys safer and more accessible for people walking and cycling.
Resurfacing and improved road markings have also been delivered as part of the project, helping to improve conditions for drivers using the junction.
With the junction now open, Mr Rosindell said residents should welcome the return of normality, but warned that the wider issues surrounding Gallows Corner have not gone away.
“Let us celebrate that things can now finally get back to normal and we have access to Gallows Corner once again,” he said.
“However, we will not forget that TfL and the Mayor of London let us down very badly indeed.
“This proves yet again that allowing the Mayor of London to have so much power and to make so many decisions that impact us when he does not care, with TfL that always look at Havering with very low priority, is another reason why giving City Hall and the Mayor so much control over our borough has to end, with better arrangements put in place for the future.”
Mr Rosindell also pointed to his long-running campaign for a different approach to Gallows Corner.
“As local MP for the area for the last 25 years, I have fought year in and year out to get a change for Gallows Corner with a better road layout.
“They went for a cheaper option, but at least we now have a new facility which will hopefully be sustained for a number of years and the safety of local residents has now to be paramount.
“I still have a list of issues that need to be addressed which I will be taking with TfL.
“Although it is open, the battle is not over.”
The project team has apologised for the delays and disruption caused and thanked the public for their patience while the essential work was carried out.
For Havering motorists, however, the immediate message is simple: after months of disruption, diversions and frustration, Gallows Corner is finally open and traffic can once again move through the junction.
