New Ukulele Group Strikes a Chord with Heartwarming Debut Performance at Ashcroft Care Home

There were smiles, singing and plenty of applause at Ashcroft Care Home yesterday as a newly formed ukulele group from Hornchurch Country Park gave its first ever public performance.

The talented group, which has been meeting for the past two years at the Ingrebourne Nature Centre, entertained residents with a lively set featuring well-loved songs by James, Andy Williams, Snow Patrol and many other popular artists.

The performance marked a proud milestone for the musicians, many of whom had never played in front of an audience before. Their enthusiasm and growing confidence shone through, creating a memorable afternoon for both the performers and residents alike.

The group was founded by Martin Burdikin, a member of the internationally acclaimed ukulele band D’Ukes, with the aim of bringing people together through music. What started as a small group of people learning a few chords has grown into a welcoming musical community where friendships have flourished alongside new skills.

Martin said:

“Today’s performance was exactly what this group is all about. Two years ago we started with people who simply wanted to learn a few chords and have some fun. To see them standing together, entertaining an audience with confidence and enjoying every minute was incredibly rewarding. I’m so proud of every one of them, and this is just the beginning.”

Residents clapped and sang along throughout the performance, making the debut an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

The ukulele group meets at the Ingrebourne Nature Centre in Hornchurch Country Park on the first and third Tuesday of every month. Whether you’ve never picked up a ukulele before or you’re an experienced player looking for a friendly group, everyone is welcome.
