Shocking Data Published of Child Deaths In Temporary Accommodation.
The All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Temporary Accommodation on which the Member of Parliament for Dagenham and Rainham, Margaret Mullane MP serves, has this week published data on the shocking tragedy of childhood deaths in temporary accommodation.
The APPG reported that 104 children have died between 2019 and 2025 in England, with temporary accommodation listed as a contributing factor to their death. 76 of these children were under the age of 1.
Out of all 7,024 child deaths in England, between October 2023 and September2025, 140 involved children whose usual place of residence was temporary accommodation. Statistics also show there were 64 stillbirths and 27 neonatal deaths involving mothers living in temporary accommodation in the UK in 2024.
Margaret told the Havering Daily: “These figures are shocking. The trauma of becoming homeless and then living in temporary accommodation is devastating for families. This research shown to the APPG on temporary accommodation on Monday this week, reveals the tragedy of childhood deaths in temporary accommodation.
It is essential that everything is done to tackle homelessness and the need for temporary accommodation. The Government’s law banning no fault evictions and giving greater renters’ rights are tremendous steps forward and will have a positive impact. My campaign is to get a massive increase in new build social rented homes to meet the desperate housing needs of so many local people.”
