A Collier Row Son Is Demanding Answers About What Happened To His Mum In Hospital

A Collier Row man has spoken of his distress and anger over the treatment his elderly mother has received while being cared for at Queen’s Hospital.

Kevin, says his 83 year old mother has been in the hospital since January after being admitted with low sodium levels. He told the Havering Daily that on previous occasions she had been treated and discharged within around six days, but this time her condition has significantly worsened.

“My mum will probably not be coming out of this hospital due to its awful treatment and a serious lack of care”.

Kevin explained that his mother is currently being cared for on Mandarin A ward, where doctors have informed him that she may not have long left to live.

“She was admitted with low sodium which she has had before, and normally she is in and out within a few days. But this time things are different,” he said.

According to Kevin, his mother has since developed pneumonia and sepsis and has become increasingly weak.

“She has now developed pneumonia and sepsis and is getting weaker every day. They have written nil by mouth and I have seen a vast deterioration in her,” he said.

“She was relatively ok before she went into Queen’s Hospital. She had low sodium, but now she has pneumonia and sepsis and they have already told me she will not be coming out.”

Kevin also raised serious concerns about the care his mother has received while on the ward. He claims she has developed Grade 4 pressure sores after spending long periods in bed and says he has been distressed by what he believes to be rough handling by some staff during the night.

“She has Grade 4 pressure sores where she is lying in bed all the time. She is treated so roughly at night by staff who push and pull her about,” he alleged.

He also claims his mother was not given medication that she had been taking long term.

“She has been on lifelong medication and yet she was denied this when she was placed on that ward. I asked doctors why she had not been given that medication. She was deprived of it for five weeks and I kept asking,” Kevin said.

“Some nurses told me they only gave it to her if she became anxious. Yet as soon as they finally gave her that medication her sodium levels went up.”

Kevin says he asked a doctor why the medication had not been administered earlier but felt he did not receive a clear explanation.

“When I asked one doctor why she had not been given that medication, he responded with ‘I don’t know’. All I get is palmed off there,” he said.

“These people’s horrendous treatment are costing me my mum’s welfare. They have also told me she is very unlikely to recover from this now. It truly is a horrible hospital.”

Kevin has now written to his local Member of Parliament asking for assistance in looking into the case. He says he wants answers not only for his mother but for other elderly patients who may be experiencing similar situations.

The Havering Daily has contacted the hospital trust for comment regarding the concerns raised. In response Nic Kane, Chief Nurse, said: “We’re sorry Sheila and her family are unhappy with the care she has received. Our teams are working with them to address their concerns.”
