Emotional Farewell for Havering Firefighter After 23 Years of Service.
A heartfelt goodbye from the Mayor of Havering as London Fire Brigade hero retires from duty.
After an incredible 23 years of dedicated service to the London Fire Brigade, firefighter Dave Shephard has officially retired — and those who know him well simply couldn’t let the moment pass without celebration.
Dave is a well-known and deeply respected figure in Havering, having formed strong bonds with local residents and fire crews, particularly through some of the borough’s most traumatic incidents — including the devastating fires in Wennington and on Launders Lane. His bravery, professionalism and compassion made him a familiar and trusted face to many.
For the past two and a half years, Dave has worked tirelessly alongside fellow firefighter and close colleague Debbie Monk on a groundbreaking hoarders’ project. This initiative, which focuses on identifying and assisting vulnerable individuals living in dangerous conditions, has already saved countless lives. The pair operated outside of a regular watch due to the nature of their specialist work — yet their impact has been deeply felt across the service and community alike.
Firefighters from Dave’s most recent posting in Wennington came out in full force to show their appreciation and bid him farewell. Borough Commander Paul MClenaghan and Mel Anderson Wennington Station Commander, also joined in paying tribute to Dave’s outstanding career.
The celebration was hosted at Havering Town Hall, where Havering’s Mayor, Councillor Sue Ospreay, warmly welcomed guests and led the heartfelt goodbye over tea and cakes. It was a touching send-off for a man who has dedicated more than two decades to public service and community safety.
Dave Shephard’s legacy is not only one of bravery but also of innovation, empathy, and tireless dedication to helping others. He leaves behind a fire service and a borough truly grateful for his service — and all of Havering wishes him the very best for the future.
