Boro Have To Settle For A Point

Romford 2, Great Wakering Rovers 2

By Mike Woods

Two goals to the good at half-time, Romford had to settle for a point as Great Wakering Rovers staged a second-half comeback to claim a draw.

In what could justifiably be described as a game of two halves, Romford bossed the play in the first half and were good value for their two-goal lead at the break, but the visitors (who made four changes at half-time) were much the better side in the second 45 minutes and fully deserved their point.

Romford began on the front foot and Samir Ali put a shot wide in the very first minute, and after nine minutes Aron Gordon took Jaxon Brown’s pass and tricked his way to the goal-line, but could not beat Wakering keeper George Marsh with his cross.

Harrison Day had already had an acrobatic scissors kick blocked by Wakering keeper George Marsh before he put Boro ahead on the half-hour. The Rovers defence could not clear Teddy Desmond’s lofted pass from the left and Day ran on and drove a low shot past Marsh.

A rare chance for the visitors saw Brandy Makuendi shoot over after 32 minutes, but in the last minute of the first period, Day doubled Boro’s lead. After a good Boro build-up, Jaxon Brown crossed and Day showed excellent control, turning and firing past Marsh.

After dominating Rovers in the first half, Romford found the visitors a different proposition after the interval. They went close after 47 minutes when Brandy Makuendi shot wide after running into space, and the same player was only denied a shooting opportunity in a dangerous area by Greig Stewart’s intervention.

Rovers scored the goal their play had been threatening after 61 minutes. Finley Ledger’s shot was pushed out by George Sapsford, but after Boro had blocked Rovers’ next effort, Shaun Gittleson found the net with a well-struck shot from outside the box. The visitors levelled after 68 minutes when Harry Talbot found space on the left and shot across goal and in at the far post.

Both sides had chances to win it in the closing stages as Reece Conway shot wide in the last minute and with the last kick of the game Boro’s Ekow Owusu-Boakye diverted Desmond’s low cross over the bar.

Disappointing for Romford to merely draw after leading 2-0, but on the basis of their second half display, no one could begrudge Great Wakering their point.

Romford now have a 10-day break until their next game, which is a visit to Halstead Town. Originally scheduled for next Saturday, the game had been put back until the following Tuesday, 29th September.
