Romford Is Going Back To The 90s For A Free Day Of Rave Culture

Romford’s rave years will return to the Mercury this weekend through live DJs, creative workshops and an immersive journey inside a modified VW Golf.

The free Mega Mega 90s Takeover will run throughout the shopping centre from 11am until 3pm on Saturday 5 September.

The event closes the Mercury’s Sounds Like Summer programme and looks back at the pirate radio stations, record shops, clubs and dancefloors that helped shape Romford’s electronic music scene.

Visitors can make their own 1990s-inspired zine on Level One, using vintage magazines to explore the decade’s fashion, alternative culture and local rave history.

The NO Collective will invite people to experiment with electronic music using phones, plant signals, touch, water, fruit and everyday objects. PURE FM DJs will also perform live sets as the locally owned dance station marks the launch of its DAB service across Essex and East London.

On Level Three of the car park, visitors can step inside BOSH, an artwork by Rosie Strickland built around a modified VW Golf. Music, voices and recordings gathered in Romford create a sound journey through the anticipation and memories of a night out.

People with photographs, memorabilia or stories from Romford and Havering’s clubbing years can share them with the Havering London team outside Lumiere Cinema at Daniel’s View.

The takeover supports the forthcoming Mega Mega: Romford’s Suburban Sound Revolution exhibition, which will celebrate the borough’s club and dance-music heritage.
