‘We Don’t Believe It Started by Chance’: Residents Speak Out After Rainham Fire Destroys £12K Worth of Children’s Sports Equipment.
Please Help Rainham Cricket and Football Club raise much needed funds after the fire destroyed much of their equipment.
Children’s sporting equipment worth an estimated £12,000 has been destroyed after a large fire broke out behind Spring Park Farm in Rainham yesterday.
The blaze is believed to have started shortly after 12pm before spreading across land alongside Upminster Road North. Residents estimate that around six hectares of grassland were affected.
Among the items destroyed were cricket practice nets and other sporting equipment belonging to Rainham Cricket Club and the local football club, leaving young players without vital equipment ahead of the season.
The Havering Daily spoke to the club’s Vice Chairman, who said:
“We have lost a lot of our nets. Around £12,000 worth of children’s sporting equipment has been lost.”
The fire has added to the frustration of local residents, who say they are already affected by the recurring fires at nearby Launders Lane.
One resident told the Havering Daily:
“Residents here are questioning how this fire started and we believe it did not start by chance.”
Following the destruction, a GoFundMe page has been launched to help replace the equipment so that local children can continue taking part in cricket and football.
The loss has been described as a devastating blow for the club and the many young people who rely on the facilities throughout the summer.

Most fires, as your piece on the efforts of the Havering litter picker volunteers (💪) pointed out, start with discarded rubbish. While I dont ‘hope’ this is the case, rather then a malicious act, the main issue is to replce the equipment lost to help the young people affected. So I have made a donation and wish those affected all the best in recovering from the experience. 👍
