‘We’ve Been Forgotten’: Rainham Residents Face Another Summer of Smoke, Ash and Fear as Launders Lane Fire Erupts

As another heatwave grips Havering, residents living near the Launders Lane landfill say they are once again trapped in a nightmare they fear has become an annual reality.

For many people, summer brings thoughts of sunshine, barbecues and time spent outdoors. But for families living near the Launders Lane landfill site in Rainham, summer means something very different.

It means fire season.

As temperatures continue to soar, residents say they had been waiting for the inevitable. Yesterday, those fears became reality when another major fire broke out at the landfill site.

The London Fire Brigade mobilised eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters to tackle the blaze, which involved piles of waste. Crews worked throughout the night in difficult conditions due to limited access to the site.

Across social media, dramatic videos showed huge flames lighting up the evening sky.

The Havering Daily reported live from near the scene, where enormous plumes of thick smoke could be seen drifting across Rainham as the wind carried it over residential areas.

The smell was overpowering.

Residents described it as strong, acrid and choking.

Ash fell from the sky, settling on homes, gardens, cars and streets.

As the smoke spread, families rushed to shut their windows and doors in an attempt to keep the fumes out of their homes. For many, it has become a routine they know all too well.

From their back gardens, residents watched flames burning across the site long into the evening.

For those living nearby, this is no longer an isolated incident. It has become what many describe as the “new normal.”

Living with windows closed during hot weather has become the norm.

Wiping ash from windows, patios and cars has become the norm.

Breathing in the smell of smoke during the height of summer has become the norm.

Residents say they have raised concerns for years. They have contacted authorities, pleaded for action and hoped that a long-term solution would finally be found.

Yet, as another summer fire burns, many feel nothing has changed.

There is a growing feeling within the community that they have been left to cope with the consequences alone.

Many now say they feel forgotten.

As the heatwave continues and temperatures remain high, residents are once again left asking the same question:

How many more summers will they have to live like this?
