Dagenham and Rainham MP Joins Newly Formed Parliamentary Group To Focus on Countering Wildfires.

Countering the threat of wildfires is the focus of a new All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG), which the Dagenham and Rainham MP-Margaret Mullane is supporting. In the summer 2022, during the hottest day of the year, wildfires swept through Wennington Village and Farm Close off Ballards Lane in Dagenham, destroying 34 homes.

The threat of wildfires across the UK, from moors and heath lands, has increased with rising temperatures associated with climate change. The APPG is being set up to consider best practice in preventing and managing these devastating events to the environment, wildlife and homes on the periphery of affected areas.

Margaret Mullane MP has emphasised to the Parliamentarians that wildfires are not just a problem for rural areas but also are a real threat to homes and lives in more urban areas.

Margaret told the Havering Daily: “I greatly welcome the establishment of this All Party Parliamentary Group and in its work I want there to be a focus on how to effectively reduce the risk of wildfires in areas such as Dagenham and Rainham.

I was able to report that wildfires aren’t just a problem in rural areas, they are a threat to the outskirts of towns and cities, giving the awful experience of residents of Wennington Village and Farm Close Dagenham just four years ago.”
