Latest: Gallows Corner set for sudden partial reopening as drivers brace for major traffic changes.
Gooshays Ward Councillor Paul MGeary has been working behind the scenes to get the Gallows Corner junction open as quickly as possible. Today, he has shared the latest update with the Havering Daily.
Transport for London has announced plans to fast track a partial reopening of the Gallows Corner flyover, with eastbound traffic potentially returning as early as Sunday or Monday.
Under the proposal, the flyover would reopen eastbound only, with no access from the A12 Eastern Avenue onto the roundabout in that direction. This is a slight change from the option previously considered.
TfL says it will manage the impact by rebalancing traffic signal timings across key junctions, increasing capacity on the A12 and A127 approaches, and continuing to control side road movements and bus performance. Traffic is expected to return gradually due to suppressed demand, helping to limit immediate congestion.
Contingency measures will also be in place, including the use of upstream signals and crossings to regulate traffic flow if needed. TfL has confirmed that the situation will be closely monitored, with the ability to make further changes quickly if issues arise.
One key concern is that closing the A12 Eastern Avenue eastbound access to the roundabout could divert traffic onto Main Road and Straight Road towards the A12 Colchester Road and the M25, which may increase pressure on local routes.
The council has said it will continue to push for the best outcome for residents while monitoring the impact closely.
