Mind Havering, Barking and Dagenham launches ‘Thorpey’s Bat and Chat’ to support people’s mental health through cricket.
A mental health charity in Havering, Barking and Dagenham has launched ‘Thorpey’s Bat and Chat‘, a new programme using cricket to help people improve their mental health and wellbeing.
Delivered by Mind Havering Barking and Dagenham and Hornchurch Cricket Club, the programme offers local people the chance to come together in a relaxed, supportive environment to enjoy cricket-based activities while having open conversations about mental health.
Thorpey’s Bat and Chat forms part of a national initiative inspired by the legacy of former England and Surrey cricketer Graham Thorpe, MBE. It is supported by mental health charity Mind and Surrey County Cricket Club, along with the Thorpe family.
Thorpey’s Bat and Chat has been made possible thanks to fundraising through “A Day for Thorpey”, a special event held at The Kia Oval on August 1st 2025 which celebrated Graham’s life. Money raised through headband sales and donations has helped local Minds to deliver Thorpey’s Bat and Chat sessions in communities across England and Wales, creating safe spaces where people can get active, connect with others and talk openly about how they’re feeling.
Participants do not need cricket experience to take part, and the sessions are inclusive and welcoming for anyone who may be struggling with their mental health or looking to boost their wellbeing. The sessions are open to everyone aged 18+.
The programme builds on the original Bat and Chat model developed by Burton & District Mind.
Gary Anderson, Trustee at Mind Havering, Barking and Dagenham, said:
“We know that staying active and connecting with others can have a positive impact on our mental health, but it’s not always easy to take that first step. Opening up about your feelings can feel daunting.
“Thorpey’s Bat and Chat is about creating a friendly and supportive space where people can enjoy being active while talking openly about their mental health if they want to.
“We’re proud to be part of this national programme and to be continuing Graham Thorpe’s legacy by supporting people in our community.”
