‘Love Thy Neighbour’ Is Being Abandoned As Christianity Becomes Increasingly Weaponised Against Asylum Seekers.

The great inequality that both migrants and too many citizens in Britain share is poverty, and poverty results from deep inequalities and structural injustices.

Like the Conservatives who preceded them, the current Labour Government are obsessed with economic growth. This fiscal fixation is distorted with only the narrowest of lenses, completely discounting the immense boost to the economy created by unpaid carers, for example, who save the government a whopping estimated £162 billion each year.

These are dangerous times for the most vulnerable among us; the poorest and most disenfranchised are being actively othered, excluded, and demonised. This is leading to public witch hunts dressed up as protests.

I can understand that people are angry. Injustice rightly enrages us. But the real causes of injustice are only going to get worse if leaders and citizens continue to become distracted by narratives that other and dehumanise.

The bottom line is that fellow human beings – our brothers and sisters in Christ, if you are Christian – are not safe. It is critical at this time that we reject hateful calls to racist, misdirected blame.

Let’s be honest, the summer wildfires are the tip of the iceberg in Havering. As climate change worsens and war continues, we will see more forced migration as more civilians are displaced from their homes.

If Labour continues not only to drive people into poverty by failing disabled people and carers; but to fail and demonise our neighbours – forcing them to enact their human right to asylum in the most dangerous and undignified ways in the absence of safe routes – crime and social unrest will only get worse.

Therefore, it’s crucial at this time that we take care and protect each other from harm against a dangerous, politically coordinated tide of increasingly sanitised and normalised racism.
