Andrew Rosindell, Member of Parliament for Romford, has taken to the floor during Business Questions in Parliament to call on the Secretary of State for Transport to address the ongoing destruction of trees and vegetation along the Liberty Line by Network Rail.

This follows repeated concerns from local residents and Mr. Rosindell’s own attempts to seek clarification from the rail operator, which have gone unanswered.

Speaking in Parliament, Mr. Rosindell expressed outrage at reports of Network Rail’s heavy-handed and indiscriminate approach to vegetation management, which has resulted in the removal of healthy trees and plants at several points along the line, including areas far removed from the tracks at Emerson Park Station.

Residents have reported that Network Rail’s actions have caused significant distress and frustration, particularly as the company has failed to consult the local community or its MP about the works.

This lack of engagement comes despite assurances given after a similar incident in 2022, which provoked widespread anger.

Mr. Rosindell sent a letter on Friday to Network Rail’s Chief Executive requesting urgent clarification and a commitment to halt unnecessary tree-cutting, has yet to receive a response.

Network Rail appears to be in breach of the Department for Transport’s biodiversity guidelines, titled Enhancing Biodiversity and Wildlife on the Lineside. These guidelines mandate that Network Rail achieves ‘no net loss of biodiversity’ and actively collaborates with local communities.

Andrew Rosindell concluded by urging the Secretary of State for Transport to intervene and hold Network Rail accountable.
