Hornchurch Year 6 Pupil Launches Petition To Make Globe Road Safer Following The Injury Of Fellow Pupil By A Car.
Parents and children at a primary school in Hornchurch are imploring Havering Council to implement safety measures that will make their everyday commute to school safer, after a school pupil was injured in an accident involving a car on a nearby road.
Yesterday, Monday 9th December, the Havering Daily joined Councillor Judith Holt and pupils at Hylands Primary School to talk about the difficulties they face when leaving school and having to cross the very busy Globe Road.

Ronnie Anderson, a Year 6 pupil at the school, who is one of the School Advocates, has set up a petition to help make Globe Road, which contains a pedestrian entrance and exit gate from the school, safer for everyone. Following the accident to the Reception pupil at the end of November, Ronnie was devastated, has since been determined to make a change and has, with the help of his mother, posted the petition on Change.org.

Ronnie told the Havering Daily just how difficult it can be for pupils walking home with their parents and trying to cross such a busy road that is repeatedly full of parked vehicles. He spoke about the difficulty in being able to see your way past the endless parked cars and also the way vehicles speed down the road with no care about pupil’s safety.
“It is a frightening situation for any parent to witness such an incident and feel a sense of helplessness,” said Ronnie’s mother. “Unfortunately, reckless driving is a daily occurrence along Globe Road, with parents causing chaos with their cars, arguing with each other, causing congestion and difficulties for everyone. It is making it near-impossible to get to school or simply cross the road safely. Globe Road has been an ‘accident waiting to happen’ for years. This is not just about our school, this is about the safety of all our children, local residents and our community.”Councillor Judith Holt, Conservative Councillor for St. Alban’s Ward, where Hylands Primary School is situated, is fully supportive of the petition. “I was contacted by Ronnie and his mother to see if there was anything I could do to help following the accident. Havering Council has already installed speed humps and part of Globe Road is 20 mph-only, but we must see if there is anything more that can be done. The injured boy was in hospital for two weeks. We don’t want the next accident to a child to be fatal.”
Well done to Ronnie and the pupils at Hylands Primary School who spoke extremely well about their concerns when using this busy road.
