A thug who violently assaulted officers in Barking who were detaining him as he wielded a hammer at the public, has been sentenced to 39 week’s in prison.

On Tuesday, 24 September, Mariusz Magda, 26, (03.08.1998) of North Street, Barking appeared at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court, where he was sentenced to 39 weeks’ imprisonment for common assault of an emergency worker, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and assault by beating of an emergency worker.  He had pleaded guilty to these offences.

At around 00:30 on Monday, 23 September, police were deployed in Barking to Operation Nightingale – which has been established to reduce violent crime – when they were flagged down by a bus driver who reported a man armed with a hammer on Station Parade.

Officers located a man holding a hammer on nearby Cambridge Road. The man was given verbal instructions to drop the hammer and during the process of being detained, he actively began to resist. The man went on to kick out at police officers and also attempted to head-butt an officer, hitting the officer’s body worn camera. Despite his violent actions, Magda was securely detained and arrested.

Inspector Carroll Weeden “Officers were working through the night in Barking to reassure the public and reduce violent crime, and they put themselves in harm’s way to protect the public from Magda and the weapon he was holding. The violence used against those officers goes a long way to indicating how important this police intervention might have been.

“This isn’t the first time that Magda has been convicted of assaulting emergency workers. The message to him, and I hope to anyone else who assaults the police officers working to keep Londoners safe, is very clear. Violence against anyone, including emergency workers, will not be tolerated and those who assault police may find themselves behind bars not only in a police cell but for an extended period in prison.”

Well done to this officer and all those involved in arresting this thug. The message is clear, ‘violence against officers trying to do their job should never be tolerated.’
