Labour Prospective Parliamentary candidate for Dagenham and Rainham Margaret Mullane today shares her monthly column in the Havering Daily.

Like most people, I always see the New Year as a time for hope and reflection on the year that has passed.

From my work in the community and listening to the everyday struggles that local people have faced I know that life has been really tough for so many people in Dagenham and Rainham. There’s a sense that nothing seems to be working properly. Public services are at breaking point, we see it in our NHS at Queen’s Hospital and our GPs, we see it in the lack of police on our streets, and we see it in our communities as vital services have been stripped back through harsh cuts to council funding. Our country seems to have gone backwards following 13 years of Tory government failure after failure.

Despite that gloom it’s been a privilege to meet so many local people on the doorstep, at coffee mornings and at community events. I’m looking forward to meeting thousands more residents in the new year. Over the coming month a calendar unveiling my pledges to Dagenham & Rainham will be going through letterboxes and at the heart of my offer is a new model of politics, making sure local people are heard at all levels of the political process.

My hope and commitment is that under a Labour Government I would build on the work we have already started together as a community, delivering the long-awaited station at Beam Park, finally sorting out the Launders Lane disgrace and continuing the ‘Bring Back Our Bobbies’ campaign – adding to the new police team we have secured for Dagenham Heathway in the new year. I will also ensure that our GPs and Queen’s Hospital feel the benefit when Labour begins the largest recruitment drive in NHS history.

I want to thank all those who worked through the Christmas period – retail staff, carers, the NHS, our emergency workers and many more – what would we do without you. My campaign to be the next MP in Dagenham and Rainham is supported by many voices across the labour movement, central to my promise at the next election will be a New Deal for Working People.

It is truly sad to recognise that this Christmas was not a peaceful one for everyone in the world. My thoughts are with those families currently living in conflict, and I hope and pray for a peaceful resolution as soon as possible. Back at home I wish you and your family a heartfelt happy and prosperous New Year.

Opinions are not facts; here’s another. Labour would have fared no better, given the effects of Brexit, Covid and the Ukraine War. Easy to say otherwise, when not put to the test. Political rhetoric is so predictable!

The Tories have let everyone down in Havering, including councillors and MPs that represent this failed party. It’s time we saw a change in parties and people were to wake up on how the local councillors and MPs ignore constituents and don’t care about law and order!
