East London LGBTQ+ Film Festival debut its first year at Premiere Cinema in Romford.
The East London LGBTQ+ Film Festival is set to debut its first year in Premiere Cinemas Romford on November 4th.
Alongside blockbuster Kinky Boots, there will be a mix of UK-based and international independent filmmakers. Indie films include the documentary ‘Stonewall Postal Action Network’ (SPAN) by Scottish director Sarah Elizabeth Drummond. SPAN is a short documentary telling the story of Austin Allen’s activism, his letter writing campaign and the packing up of his life work for an archive as he contemplates his legacy from his new home in rural Wales.
Another film selected is RE:GEN(D)ERATION’ by Hanlon Uafás-Álainn. This short is about Tyler, who discovers he’s pregnant and he needs help deciding what to do, so calls upon the support of his chosen trans family and a magical phoenix.
Music videos are also a part of this festival as music has always been a cultural landmark for the LGBTQ+ community. The music videos depict passionate same-sex kisses, and emotive dancing, something that is often lost in mainstream media.
Tickets are on sale now at www.kaleidoscoperomford.com for only £15 for a day pass. Money raised from this festival will go towards Kaleidoscope’s creative workshops for the following year.
Kaleidoscope is a social group that runs monthly for under 24-year-olds. As there is no other LGBTQ+ space for the general public, the film festival will be the perfect place for people of any age to meet other members of the community, while supporting independent cinema.
It is important to note that independent films are unrated, meaning some may be inappropriate for under 18’s.
Festival Director Carrie Kendall said: “Cinema has played a pivotal role for acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community. It normalises and demystifies same-sex relationships. It’s also just nice to see someone like yourself on the big screen.”
Special guests David McGillivray and Sarah Jane Potts will also be attending throughout the day. There will also be a thematic cocktail bar run by guest mixologists, an opportunity to network with film-makers and talks about the films too.
Ending the night with an awards ceremony, the audience will be choosing the winners through a public vote.
