Margaret Mullane is the Labour Prospective Candidate for Dagenham and Rainham. She is not only extremely experienced in working first hand with her community, but intent on putting her community at the centre of everything she does. Margaret really is a ‘people’s person.’

On 29 April Margaret held her first community event at the Mardyke Community centre in South Hornchurch. All members of the community came to join in discussions about their concerns for the area and what they would like politicians to address.

She told the Havering Daily: “I wanted to give the community a chance to have their voices heard. Often our community members do not feel heard or frequently feel that they respond to a consultation, but no notice is taken of their views.

“This is the first of many events aimed at making our community the centre of the work we do here.”

The community members sat and shared their views on the topics they felt were the most concerning for the local area.

Margaret continued:”People were glad that they had the opportunity to chat about their concerns. Key areas were crime and policing, the state of their streets and how shabby and run down they felt the area looked and the building of endless flats in the area, rather than affordable housing.

“Policing and crime was high on the agenda, residents were concerned about the lack of police presence in the area.

“They were also worried about the endless building of flats instead of affordable housing and stated that many of the flats were eyesores.”

Margaret is currently working in the office of Jon Cruddas MP and is very familiar in dealing first hand with concerned residents and how to best advise them.

She has also taken note of everything residents shared with her at this first meeting and is addressing these needs the best way she can.

“It is very important that our community is at the centre of the work we do and that we acknowledge what their views and needs are.”

Margaret is a very open and approachable councillor who wants her community to be the centre focus of all her political work and encourages residents to meet her and share their views with her.

The next community meeting will be held on 24 June.
