Hero firefighters have performed a ‘snatch’ rescue to save the life of a child stuck in a vehicle that was rapidly filling up with icy water. The incident took place last Saturday December 10 on a slip road off the A13 New Road, Rainham. The car had driven through across land used for storage and began to fill up with freezing water leaving three adults and a child stranded inside.

As temperatures plummeted just after 5pm, police closed the road off as firefighters went to the rescue as they saw the car had already filled with four foot of water. Without fear for their own safety, firefighters rushed in not knowing just how deep the water on the outside was and rescued the child from the vehicle. Thanks to the heroic actions of these firefighters who performed a snap rescue, the child was saved.

The remaining adults were then led to safety by the fire crews from Wennington.

Well done to Wennington Red Watch whose heroic actions have saved a family’s life. These are the same firefighters who battled the horrendous blaze this summer that destroyed fourteen properties.

A spokesperson for the Met Police told the Havering Daily:

“Officers were called at 17:16hrs on Saturday, 10 December to A13 at the junction with New Road, Wennington.
A car was reported to have entered water at the location.
Officers, LFB and LAS attended the scene.
Three adults and a child were assisted from the car and taken to hospital as a precaution.”
