Councillor asks for government to protect homelessness grant.
Romford ward Councillor David Taylor today writes in the Havering Daily:
Following the revelation that Havering’s Homelessness Prevention Grant is facing a 25% reduction, Conservatives Councillor David Taylor has written to the government asking them to rethink.
Initially writing to Paul Scully MP, Minister for London and Minister of State (Minister for Local Government, as well as Romford MP Andrew Rosindell, Councillor Taylor asks them to show Conservatives are worthy of the title Compassionate Conservatives.
“I got into politics to play my part in ‘correcting oppression; bringing justice, and pleading the widow’s cause’. Cutting homelessness funding is not this. My party must urgently rethink any decision to cut this spending”. Councillor Taylor said.
“As member champion for the voluntary sector, I can say that our heroic volunteers are already stretched too thin. Cutting back this vital service, at a time when homelessness is soaring, will only push them over the edge.”
Councillor Taylor acknowledges that spending does need to be reduced, however, he says that those in positions of authority must seek wisdom.
“We’re told that wisdom is greater than gold”, Taylor said. “seeing as the gold is running out, it’s probably time to be wise with what’s left. This means the right reductions in the right places and protecting spending in the right places”.
“I see no wisdom in withdrawing support for the homeless”.
