Friday 18 of February saw Havering police launch OWL, the Online Watch Link alongside Havering Council.

Chief Inspector Chris Nixon was joined by Officers from Romford Town Centre team and Councillor Ciaran White and Shelly Hart from Neighbourhood Watch.

Using this online tool, our police will be able to send out specific communications relating to where you live.

Chief Inspector Nixon Neighbourhood Policing lead for Havering, Barking & Dagenham and Redbridge Neighbourhood Policing said:

“This is an excellent system for our Safer Neighbourhood Teams in your area to communicate with you directly.  As a resident you will get to hear directly from the police on incidents and events that may concern and matter to you.  Content is dedicated to personal safety, crime & fraud prevention, local incidents, alerts for serious purposes, community intelligence, missing people & pandemics.   Communications and alerts are sent to you by email”.

OWL stores personal data in the UK on dedicated, secure servers. OWL is bound by UK laws, all of which are fully enforceable by contracts with UK Government authorities, under UK law and by UK courts.

To receive such communications, all you need to do is sign up www.owl.co.uk  This service is free of charge to you and advertisement free.

What was wrong with Nextdoor which already had a following of 30,000 residents across 3 boroughs and was free. Havering have had to waste tax payers money of this as I know it is subscription based.
Nextdoor does exactly what Owl does and could also send free text messages whereas Owl costs every time a message is sent, Nextdoor also allowed you to contact residents in a geographical area based on the crimes happening.

I registered on Owl and got sent a crime update from the local police officer by email. It seems very local as it mentioned nearby streets. It’s useful to know what’s going on without having to scroll through loads of random stuff on nextdoor and other social media sites. When I registered on owl it also let me join dog watch and CCTV watch as I have a camera that might help the police one day. It didn’t cost a penny to join or to get the email so I don’t know what the previous person is talking about.
