Stay safe this bonfire night.

Havering Council is teaming up with the London Fire Brigade (LFB) to remind residents to enjoy Bonfire Night safely.

The Council, along with LFB and local Police, is encouraging residents to try and buy quieter fireworks if hosting their own displays at home and to ensure neighbours are made aware before letting them off.

Dogs, cats and all pets should be kept inside and have a hiding place, as they often get distressed.

As COVID-19 cases remain high, keeping safe against the virus is also important. While the majority of events to enjoy around Bonfire Night are outside, if you are meeting up with friends and family indoors, remember to let fresh air in.

If you are considering having a bonfire or fireworks display at home, please also remember to:

  • Only buy fireworks which carry the CE safety mark and are from licensed sellers.
  • Only have bonfires if they are clear of buildings, sheds, fences and hedges.
  • Store fireworks safely, in their original packaging, keep dry and away from sources of heat and ignition.
  • Always follow the instructions with fireworks for safe use and disposal
  • Lock them away from children and animals.
  • Pets should be kept inside when fireworks are being let off and checked on to ensure they are not distressed.
  • Keep an eye on everyone using sparklers as these stay very hot for a long time. Wear gloves and place in a bucket of sand or water once they have burnt out.
  • Buy quieter fireworks which will cause less noise and distress to vulnerable neighbours and pets.

Our public protection teams have been out across the borough to check on whether local retailers are meeting regulations when it comes to selling fireworks.

Councillor Viddy Persaud, Cabinet Member for Public Protection and Safety, said:

“We are asking residents to be safe and be considerate to their neighbours and surrounding community this bonfire night. Fireworks are a wonderful sight, but can also be dangerous.

“At a time when there is still pressure on our emergency services including the police, London Fire Brigade and NHS, due to COVID-19, we’re asking residents not put themselves at risk.

“Havering Council wishes everyone a happy and safe Bonfire Night.”
