Last week the Havering Daily ran an article on climate change and the council by Havering’s Extinction Rebellion. Following this article, Rainham councillor and climate change denier David Durant, added his comments.
So Havering Extinction Rebellion have decided to fact check the information Councillor Durant is sending out to Havering residents: Here is their response.
It’s not just frustrating that somebody could think climate change is a ‘fallacy’ in 2021, but worse that this is someone who is helping to make decisions on our behalf. Even worse still, we know that Cllr Durant is not the only Councillor with these views in Havering.
Havering Extinction Rebellion would love to know the views of each of the Councillors selected to be part of the newly formed ‘Climate Change Topic Group’ in relation to climate change, to see whether the Topic Group stands a chance of setting up positive changes within Havering, or whether this group is being set up to fail.
This whole situation emphasises the need for XR’s 3rd demand, for us to be able to go beyond politics and for Government and Councils to create and be led by the decisions of a Citizens’ Assembly. To find solutions that we all need and that we agree with, it is essential that citizens should be included in the decision-making process, rather than our decisions being made by those who do not fairly represent us. We look forward to highlighting as many views as possible from Councillors, residents and local experts in our film, ‘Think Global, Act Local’ soon to be launched in June.
If you would like to know more about what we do, or would like to give some time to XR Havering please come and join us here and give us a message, or you can join our upcoming event Heading for Extinction and What to do About It here. We look forward to meeting you!
