Christmas events go virtual as lights go on around Havering.

Festive lights and Christmas trees across the borough will be switched on, on Thursday 26th of November.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the traditional switch-on events across the borough have not been possible. Replaced instead by a virtual Christmas event for each Town Centre, shared across the Council’s Facebook and YouTube channels.

The first event is set to take place on Thursday 26th of November and includes a sneak peek of Brookside Theatre’s panto, The Wizard of Oz, as well as a dance by Lit Youth, a performance by Rae Harding as seen on this year’s The Voice Kids and a message from Father Christmas.

Additional events include a performance from Hornchurch singer Charlotte Ambrose, Christmas party dances with favourite children’s characters and performances from Havering Music School and local school choirs.

Councillor John Mylod, Mayor of Havering, said:

“Each year thousands of residents enjoy our Christmas switch-on events across the borough. It’s disappointing that this year’s traditional events cannot go ahead, but the safety of our residents must come first.

“Whilst this year we will be celebrating the start of the festive period differently, with virtual events for the whole family to enjoy, our wonderful Christmas lights and trees will still be up across the borough for everyone to enjoy.

“I wish all residents a safe and COVID-free Christmas. While this year is anything but normal, I hope everybody gets to spend time with their families and loved ones, whether in person or virtually.   Please remember to stick to the rules to keep yourselves and your loved ones safe.“

More information on other virtual events will be published in due course at www.havering.gov.uk/christmas
