Chelmsford AC Essex Clubs Virtual Mile Challenge 25th – 29th May 2020

With all athletic competitions and club activities suspended until at least the end of June, the sport has seen the emergence of virtual competitions to keep athletes involved.

This week saw the first local large-scale event as Chelmsford AC organised an Essex Clubs Virtual Mile Challenge with around 600 athletes taking part including over 50 club athletes. This virtual competition saw athletes running an individual one mile efforts during a five day period, and uploading verified times to the organisers.

Club athletes excelled at this virtual challenge, winning three team and an individual gold, backed up with five silver and three bronzes.

The Under 13 Boys, many of them in their first year of competition, took team gold with four in the top five led home by Findlay McLaren in silver and Freddie Rowe third, as Jack West and Joseph Oton were fourth & fifth fastest, and Zack Higgins’ 12th place ensured gold. Four other club athletes made it nine in total in this age group.

he Under 17 Girls did even better filling six of the top seven places, including all three medallists as Natalie Sewell claimed gold and Sydney Foley in silver and Maddie Barker the bronze. Ella Burgess and Nicole Langan were the other scorers in fifth & sixth, with Holly Bradley in 7th.

The Veteran men added the third team gold as Barry Smith took silver and Rob Trevor placed sixth. Martin Chester (11th), Trevor Keys (14th) and 21st placed Rob Dickenson were the scorers.

The Under 15 Boys were edged out of gold by just one point. Daniel Lammas was the fastest in fourth and Owen Fisher (6th) Oliver Taylor-Bush (8th) and Oscra Shearing 910th) made the tyop 10, whiel Michael Tesi, Charlie Burgess & Toby Johnson placed equal 12th. Eight other finishers made it a 15 strong line up.

The Under 15 Girls also took team silver with Charlotte Evans, Freya Long, Hannah Evans and Roby Tillson placing sixth to ninth with Ruby Higgins in 11th. The inexperienced Under 13 Girls took bronze with Rosie Warner (22nd), Maggie Smith (28th), Charlotte Casey-Sweeney (40th) Scarlett Woods (42nd) and Abigail Rogers in 51st the five scorers.
